First year core class that examines concepts at the heart of contemporary anthropological theory - race, culture, indigeneity, gender and sexuality, experience, ethnography, meaning, rationality, and representation, among others - emerged as foundational categories of analysis from the late nineteenth century onwards as anthropology came to be gradually defined as a distinct discipline of study.
