ASIAN MEDICAL SYSTEMS
THIS COURSE IS A BASIC INTRODUCTION
THREE TRADITIONAL MEDICAL SYSTEMS O
ASIA: CHINESE MEDICINE, AYURVEDA, A
TIBETAN MEDICINE. WE WILL EXAMINE
THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS, THE
TRAINING OF PRACTITIONERS, MATERIAL
AND TECHNIQUES UTILIZED IN TREATMEN
AND IMPORTANT HISTORICAL DEVELOPMEN
IN EACH SYSTEM. WE WILL EXPLORE ISS
OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN BIOMEDICIN
AND THESE SYSTEMS, AND LARGER ISSUE
OF GLOBALIZATION IN THE PRACTICE AN
CONSUMPTION OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
TAKING AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH,
WILL AIM TO UNDERSTAND EACH SYSTEM
FROM WITHIN ITSELF WHILE ALSO PAYIN
CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SOCIAL AND
CULTURAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH EAC
SYSTEM HAS THRIVED AND HAS ALSO FAC
CHALLENGES. WE WILL EXAMINE HOW
SYSTEMS OF HEALING ARE BOTH
BIOLOGICALLY AS WELL AS CULTURALLY
BASED, AND WE WILL CONSIDER HOW THE
MEDICAL SYSTEMS RELATE TO ISSUES OF
NATIONAL IDENTITY AND GLOBAL POLITI
WE WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO TALK WIT
PRACTITIONER OF ONE OF THESE MEDICA
SYSTEMS.
