Settlement History and Archaeology of the Kuril Islands in Regional Context.

Fitzhugh, Ben. 2019 “Settlement History and Archaeology of the Kuril Islands in Regional Context.” In,  Tradition and Culture of North Pacific Rim Area: 3 Kamchatka Peninsula and Kuril Islands, edited by A. Nakada. The Proceedings of the 33rd International Abashiri Symposium. Abashiri, Japan: The Association for the Promotion of Northern Cultures. Pp. 15-24.

This paper presents results of the Kuril Biocomplexity Project on archaeological site distributions, settlement history, and more detailed analyses of several sites that were more intensively mapped and tested during the 2006-2008 expeditions to the Kuril Islands.  The intent of the paper was to go deeper into the archaeological settlement analyses than had been possible in earlier publications, and to make distributional data available to Japanese and Russian colleagues working on related archaeological issues in Hokkaido and around the Sea of Okhotsk.
