Holly Barker, UW Anthropology Senior Lecturer and Burke Museum Curator for Oceanic and Asian Culture, spoke at the 2016 UW Freshman Convocation and was nominated for the Distinguished Contributions to Lifelong Learning Award from the University of Washington.

Radhika Govindrajan was awarded the AAA General Anthropology Division Exemplary Cross-Field Scholarship Award for her article, ‘The Goat That Died for Family: Animal Sacrifice and Interspecies Kinship in India’s Central Himalayas,’ published in American Ethnologist in 2015 and the AAA Anthropology and Environment Section Junior Scholar Award for her article, "Monkey Business,” published in Comparative Study of South Africa, Asia and the Middle East in 2015. Her book manuscript, Animal Intimacies: Interspecies Relatedness in India’s Central Himalayas, won the American Institute of Indian Studies Edward Cameron Dimock Prize in the Indian Humanities. Professor Govindrajan was also nominated for a University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award for 2017.  

Donald K. Grayson was inaugurated into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October 2016. Dr. Grayson’s book, Sex and Death on the Western Emigrant Trail: The Biology of Three American Tragedies, has been accepted for publication by the University of Utah Press. This press also published his last book, Giant Sloths and Sabertooth Cats: Extinct Mammals of the Archaeology of the Great Basin, in May, 2016.

Sara Gonzalez has been named one of ten Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholars for 2017 at the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. 

Stevan Harrell is retiring after 43 years at the UW. Two books that he edited were published this year by the University of Washington Press: Transforming Patriarchy: Chinese Families in the 20th Century, co-edited with Gonçalo Santos, and G. William Skinner; and, Rural China on the Eve of Revolution: Sichuan Field Notes, 1949-50, co-edited with William Lavely.

John Cady, Fiscal Specialist in the Department of Anthropology, was nominated for the 2017 Individual Distinguished Staff Award.
