Funding Overview 

Internal funding is funding that stems from the Department of Anthropology or the University of Washington and tends to be extremely limited. We encourage applicants to pursue external funding opportunities to support their academic journey. 

Internal Funding

At the department level, most internal funding comes in the form of Academic Student Employee appointments or fellowships/scholarships/awards offered by the Anthropology department. Internal funding can also refer to any funding from within the University of Washington. 

Department Funding

ASE Appointments

During the admission process, PhD students who are accepted into the program are given a funding letter which outlines how many years of funding (if any) the department will pledge to the student. This is often referring to the number of years in which the graduate student will be guaranteed a position as an Academic Student Employee (ASE) within the department. *Please read your funding letter carefully, this is not always the case and there are other forms of guaranteed funding.

Academic Student Employee (ASE) appointments refer to Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), and Student Assistant (SA) appointments within a specific department. These appointments are part-time (50% FTE), come with a monthly salary, and a waiver of the quarterly operating fee, building fee and technology fee (the majority of the quarterly tuition). 

Graduate students who do not receive guaranteed ASE appointments do sometimes have the ability to obtain TA/RA/SA appointments within the department if opportunities become available and all guaranteed funding commitments have been met. Students also have the option of pursuing ASE appointments in other departments.

Scholarships & Fellowships

The Anthropology Department has a limited number of internal fellowships and scholarships that students have the option of pursuing. Emails with detailed information about these opportunities will be sent to current graduate students prompting them to apply. 

Ronald Leroy Olson Fellowship

The annual Olson Fellowship originates through the generosity of the late Ronald Leroy Olson, who reserved a portion of his estate to provide financial support for “worthy University of Washington graduate students in the field of anthropology.” Preference is given to applicants who are members of Native American or Native Alaskan Tribes recognized by the US or Canadian governments. Proof of membership is required. Secondary preference given to any student who intends to specialize in linguistic, ethnological, archaeological, or biological studies of Native American peoples, particularly those of the Pacific Northwest. Deadline is January 15th

Brett E. Baldwin Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mr. And Mrs. Brooks Baldwin in memory of their son who died shortly after graduating with a BA in Anthropology in 1979. The Baldwin Scholarship is open to both current and newly admitted undergraduate and graduate students. The award amount is approximately $1000 but is subject to change. Applicants for this scholarship must request a nomination letter from a faculty member on their behalf. Deadline is January 15th

Evan David James Endowed Fellowship

This fellowship was established by the James family to enable admitted and continuing graduate students in the Department of Anthropology to complete a graduate degree. Preference is given to students who are studying any phase of Pacific Northwest Anthropology, and selection is based on evidence of dedication to studies, ambition to engage in anthropology, and academic merit. The award amount is approximately $5,000 but is subject to change. Applicants for this fellowship must request a nomination letter from a faculty member on their behalf. Deadline is January 15th

American Society of Primatologists (ASP)
Grant proposals are invited for either captive or wild primate-oriented research projects. Only ASP members may apply for grants. Grant mechanisms available to ASP members, including students, include the Small Research Grant, Conservation Small Grant, and the Melinda Novak Primate Welfare Grant. Boren Fellowships

Center for Engaged Scholarship: Dissertation Fellowship
The Center for Engaged Scholarship is an organization, created by and for social scientists, who want the United States to be a more democratic, more egalitarian, and more environmentally sustainable society. Accepting applications from Ph.D. students in the social sciences and humanities who have already completed all departmental and institutional requirements for the Ph.D. degree, including approval of the dissertation proposal. Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships
Newcombe fellowships are awarded annually to students enrolled in doctoral programs in the humanities and social sciences at graduate schools in the U.S. The Newcombe Fellowships have supported over 1400 graduate students who have written dissertations which respond to and participate in deep and meaningful conversations within religion, values, and ethics. NSF 23-531: Archaeology Program - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (Arch-DDRIG)
The Archaeology Program supports anthropologically relevant archaeological research. This means that the value of the proposed research can be justified within an anthropological context. The program sets no priorities by either geographic region or time period. The Carter G. AIIS Advanced Language Programs in India
The Advanced Language Program in India is open to graduate students (US citizens or permanent residents) who will have completed a minimum of two years of instruction in Hindi, Bengla, Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam, Sanskrit or Urdu at the time of departure.
