Anthropology of the Middle East: Contemporary Culture in Jordan

Students in Amman, Jordan

This program offers students an immersive experience in the Middle East while learning about the way anthropologists study/understand the region. Jordan is a unique country for such a learning experience. It offers a chance to see the intersections of the old and the new in both densely populated urban spaces and rural areas. In Jordan, neoliberalism, modernity, religion and politics and other key themes of the contemporary world are readily accessible in the dynamic context of a modern state. This program is designed to offer students an immersive experience in which they can reflect on these themes and examine their own beliefs/ideas about the region in the process. It will also facilitate a distinctly anthropological experience that will allow students to learn more about how the discipline approaches the region from an ethnographic lens.
